After drawn out legal conflicts with President Trump’s team, California has successfully completed its recount of votes. The results confirm that Biden has won the state and its 55 electoral votes, catapulting the President-elect over the 270 electoral votes necessary to officially win the election. All over the country today, December 14th, legislators have met in their state capitals and have formally chosen Biden. The race is over.  

The official website for the Presidential transfer of power states Biden’s priorities going into the new year, include, “confronting a pandemic, an economic crisis, calls for racial justice, and climate change. The team being assembled will meet these challenges on Day One.” The multi-sector transition team led by Biden-Harris leapt into action on election day. Their efforts set the foundation for a successful and seamless start to the next presidential term.  We approach this momentous week with nervous anticipation as the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is distributed across the United States. Biden has confirmed on multiple occasions his dedication to facing the pandemic and stabilizing the US. In keeping with this statement, Dr. Anthony Fauci has been brought on as chief medical advisor for the COVID-19 equity task force. Biden told ABC News he would take the vaccine in public when recommended by Dr. Fauci. 

In the wake of the legal battle described by law professionals around the world as laughable, executive departments have had to continue their work, burdened by a distracted President and a pandemic. The General Service Administration was among the first to acknowledge Biden’s win in anticipation of continuing their work without partisan conflict. Support for President Trump’s efforts dwindles daily with even the Wall Street Journal urging the President to issue his public concession. The closest he has come to conceding at this time is an aggressive tweet from December 11th, writing:

Now that the Biden Administration will be a scandal plagued mess for years to come, it is much easier for the Supreme Court of the United States to follow the Constitution and do what everybody knows has to be done. They must show great Courage & Wisdom. Save the USA!!!

While President Trump has been forced to acknowledge the formal transition process, he remains obstinate and continues sowing doubt within his base regarding the election’s validity. His reluctance to give up power is disappointing but not surprising. As his unfounded antagonism against the states continues, be somewhat at ease knowing his baseless claims have not delayed his leaving the White House, only the counting of votes. With recounts finished, so is he.
